Sam Seaborn grew up in Laguna Beach, California and upon graduation, got a very proper East coast education at Princeton followed by law school at Duke, where he was an editor of Duke Law Review. He took a job with Gage Whitney, the second largest firm in New York, and left at the behest of old friend Josh Lyman to join the campaign of Democratic senator John Hoynes. Sam declines but Josh is insistent and comes back to New York to invite Sam to see another candidate speak - Jed Bartlet.

Sam joins the Bartlet campaign and upon Bartlet winning the presidency, assumes the role of Deputy Communications Director under Toby Ziegler. As such, he writes speeches for the president, position papers on school vouchers and gun control and the occasional birthday card, should the need arise. He very often clashes with Ainsley Hayes of the White House Council office and enjoys Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and fighting with people who are eloquent, quick on their feet and worthy of great debate.

Hi, it's Sam. I'm sleeping for a few hours right now so you can leave a message, or if you really need me you can shout into the machine, and I'll wake up.

Kissing this character: Sure, if you're a pretty woman but be forewarned, Sam is actually kind of a dork with women.

Injuring this character (include limits and severity): See above
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: See above

General Warnings:

Sam tends to fight with words and not fists. He's very passionate about public education and gun control and he has no qualms with going toe to toe with someone on these issues, whether or not he's prepared. Overall, he isn't a terribly physical person but as an experienced attorney and long-term White House speech writer, he can out argue just about anyone.

Sam spends much of his time actually drafting speeches on behalf of the president, especially considering there's a re-election to consider, but every once in a while he starts to go cross-eyed and it's time for a break. He doesn't really mean break in the sense of "temporary closing of eyes and/or inhaling of food in the White House" but, rather, means break in the sense of actually getting to see his girlfriend face to face and sleep in a real bed.

Today is one of those days.

Sam is up to his neck in spin control and he thinks the cure for what ails him is a nice little trip to the hotel. The last few times he's tried, he hasn't gotten through, but Sam thinks that's because he genuinely was just trying to avoid work and didn't actually need the break. This time, though, he's determined to make it work and he opens his office door and steps through several times with eyes closed. He runs into a very startled intern on turn three but on turn four, he steps into the hallway in front of the suite that he sometimes, occasionally, not-often-enough visits with Ainsley in tow.

"Obviously the door is a plot device from an opera," Sam says, not checking to see if Ainsley is here yet or not. Normally they time this pretty well but he wonders, just a little, if he shouldn't have warned her before coming through so she could make her way here.

California's 48th has been red for as long as most people can remember but Sam runs a good campaign on the issues and tries his best to deflect everything his opponent throws at him. There's the usual mud-slinging, most of which is fixated on the fact that Sam had once accidentally dated a call girl and then not-so-accidentally continued his friendship with her after he knew her chosen profession.

He thinks it helps that Ainsley's by his side. She makes an excellent candidate's partner and while she's still just his girlfriend, he has a ring in his pocket that's burning a hole and he thinks tonight is the best time to do it. He'll propose to her now, before they call it, and no matter what happens, hopefully she'll be with him through it all.

"Ainsley? Could I borrow you for a moment?" Sam pitches his voice a little lower, just enough to be audible above the excited din of the ballroom they've rented out to hold their party in. It's getting down to the wire, with the votes, and he's still deadlocked with the republican candidate. It might come down to the last few precincts before one or the other of them pulls away.

"Away from the cameras and the people? There's something I wanted to ask...talk to you about."
